Hundreds of drivers spent up to 15 hours overnight stranded on US motorways. Rescue crews could not keep up in harsh conditions on the  I-65 near Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and on Interstate 24 near Paducah.

Conditions were improving a little early today after 21 inches of snow fell on Elizabethtown, about 50 miles south of Louisville. More than a foot of snow fell on other parts of Kentucky, as well as Ohio and Tennessee.

The Kentucky National Guard took some drivers  to nearby warming centers and returned others to their cars where the highways were cleared. Read more: cnn.com
