Future of Soho’s last Victorian stable yard in doubt

The future of Soho’s only remaining accessible Victorian stable yard in one of London’s most celebrated tourist areas will be decided tonight.

The Evening Standard reported that Westminster councillors will, in deciding its fate, also show where they stand in an attempt to preserve this iconic area of the city. Those campaigning to keep some of Soho’s character building are adamant that plans to redevelop the 1880s-built yard on Rupert Street would be a “mutilation” of its historic character. Currently it operates as gay bar and club The Yard. Now landlord, Hallmark Estates, are seeking to dig out a basement and erect luxury apartments above.

A leading campaigner to save Soho, television star Stephen Fry, said: “Saddened to hear The Yard under threat”, he tweeted, adding: “We must save Soho!” The owner of The Yard, Andy Jones agreed, saying: “Hidden Soho must be protected.” However, the application to councillors has already been recommended by council officers. While the building is not listed, it is full of rare original features.
