The mayor of Taipei has said he will push for closure of Songshan Airport following the crash of TransAsia flight GE235, which took off from there in February. The closure of the airport, which lies in a densely populated part of central Taipei, has been a hot-button political topic in Taiwan for the past decade. Songshan serves mostly domestic flights and routes to mainland China. The mayor said that closure of Songshan was not likely to happen before the two new runways under construction at Taoyuan Airport, Taiwan’s main international hub, are finished.
