Molten lava and other debris were shot 280ft into the air after a partial collapse of Kilauea’s Halemaumau Crater in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park caused a small explosion. Scientists at the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the rock fall unleashed gas trapped beneath the lava lake, sending volcanic rocks onto the Halema‘uma‘u Overlook, which has been closed since the lava lake was formed in 2008.
