World, Weird, Odd & Just Plain Fun



The animal world gave of its best this week, from lovesick sausage dogs and confused koalas, to arthritic penguins, it was full of peculiar stories. Here’s our selection from this week.

While taking a hike with her family in Cape Otway, Australia,  Kathy Sundstrom encountered one of the koalas who are drawn to the area because of the presence of a specific gum tree. She was soon surprised to find that the inquisitive little marsupial had mistaken her legs for tree trunks and proceeded to climb her in typical koala fashion.

A  Tasmanian wombat was found drowning in a lake at least 250 metres from the shore. Passing fisherman saw him and scooped him out with a net. The wombat reportedly seemed very docile and glad to be saved, in spite of the fact that they’re know to be quite vicious sometimes.

Grizzly bear fishing.

A Scottish climber has been seriously injured in a “terrifying” attack by a grizzly bear in Canada. Greg Boswell, from Cupar in Fife, and friend Nick Bullock were scaling an ascent called Dirty Love on the 3,261ft Mount Wilson in the Canadian Rockies.

The Assiniboine Park

A pair of orphaned polar bear cubs, which were brought to a Canadian zoo, have made their debut to the public. The cubs’ mother was accidentally killed by a resident of Northern Manitoba (the bear capital of the world) who was trying to scare her away from a building with a cracker shell.

The Humboldt penguin is due to move from the Seaview Wildlife Encounter on the Isle of Wight, which is closing down, to the Great Yarmouth Sea Life Centre in Norfolk.

An arthritic penguin is being moved to a special pool with an access ramp so that he can carry on swimming. Christine Pitcher, penguin curator at the Great Yarmouth centre, said the pool was first adapted in 2009 to allow another arthritic penguin, Lola, to waddle rather than jump in the water.

A sausage dog named Toto met a dog named Lily on holiday in Italy and it was love at first sight. Unfortunately the two were parted at the end of the holiday, as Toto’s family returned to Pompeii. But Toto was not to be dissuaded. After going missing, the owners of Lily contacted the family to say they had found Toto barking outside their home situated 10 km away.
