Australian city gets its first pop-up urinal

An Australian city now has a solution for weekend revellers desperately looking for the loo – a urinal that emerges from the sidewalk.

Northbridge, an inner city suburb of Perth, has gotten what is believed to be the first pop-up urinal in the country, reports the West Australian.

The urinals are already available through many European countries, like the UK, the Netherlands and Denmark, but are now a new addition to Australia. The urinals are designed to combat public urination and are frequently installed in areas with pubs and bars or weekend foot traffic. They are controlled with a remote and pop-up when needed – in Northbridge that will be Friday and Saturday nights – and retract back into the ground the rest of the week.

The urinals are self-cleaning and are raised and lowered manually by city staff so they can make sure no one is on the site when it is raised, or in the urinal when it is lowered.

If all goes well with the first one, the city of Perth may consider bringing in more.

While Australia’s new loo doesn’t present an option for women, the company that created the urinals – Urilift – also has a model called the UriLady that includes a seat and a door.
