Milan plans to pay commuters to cycle to work

High levels of pollution has prompted officials in the northern Italian city of Milan to consider a radical way of reducing the number of cars on its streets – paying people to cycle to work.

The city’s mobility councillor wants to copy a scheme used in France, whereby commuters are paid a small sum for each kilometre the cycle to work. Financial incentives have been shown to be one way to encourage people to use bicycles, though without safer streets and clean air the impact may be limited. Read more: theguardian.com
