It’s time for fans of Dirty Dancing to pack their bags – the lodge used in the movie is hosting themed weekends for the many lovers of the classic 1987 romance.
The Mountain Lake Lodge was used as a filming location in the movie starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, and is hosting Dirty Dancing-themed weekends through the summer. While the lodge is located in Virginia, in the film it is Kellerman’s resort in the Catskill Mountains in New York State. The Mountain Lake Lodge holds three themed weekends through the summer to celebrate the famous film, and this year, due to demand, another weekend may be held in the fall.
If you’re wondering what a Dirty Dancing weekend includes, the package starts a $335 per night and includes meals, accommodation, a dance party on Friday and Saturday night, a Dirty Dancing film tour, trivia and more. Super-fans can also live out their dancing fantasies with professional dance instruction – however falling in love with the instructor is not included.
Heidi Stone, general manager of the lodge, told Lonely Planet that Dirty Dancing fans are crazy about the movie and “most fans can recite every line”. The weekends have been held since 2013, after a major renovation and rebranding at the hotel, but each year, they change up the event with new themed activities. The lodge’s draw as a Dirty Dancing pilgrimage site extends beyond the weekends. Stone notes that during the summer, they give film tours daily, and “we have a special memorial stone created for Patrick Swayze along with our Dirty Dancing memorabilia cabin for all of the fans that visit”.
While fans flock to the site, it nearly shut down for ever back in 2012, according to Stone. At that time, the endowment which owns the property was considering closing it down because it had been losing money. After they reached out to the Urban Land Institute in Washington, DC, they were given advice on how to revitalize the property. Now, it has undergone renovations and the resort is still looking to maintain the site as a historic landmark, with the money it raises going back into its upkeep. While the Dirty Dancing weekends have received a lot of attention this year, it’s likely that the spot will see another boost next year, as 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of the film and the resort has “exciting plans” to mark the occasion.
