The trend started – as many trends do – in New York City when rival ad agencies in Lower Manhattan began a conversation using the colourful notes. It has since bloomed to a healthy artistic rivalry as other agencies on the block compete for the most intricate post-it art.

The creative window art has depicted company logos, video game characters, inspirational messages and lots of superheroes. Many offices are also bringing the post-it art indoors, using it as a cost-effective way to brighten up an office space.

While the “official” Canal Street war ended with a fundraiser in June, post-it art practice has begun to spread to offices worldwide and has been spotted in Melbourne, Toronto, London and Auckland, to name just a few.

The artwork is proving a source of delight and distraction to many office workers and many of them have official sanctions from their companies to continue the practice.

One company that is very happy about the trend are Post-it itself. They’ve even created a guide to help first-time pixel artists with creating murals in their own office space.
