Stay in a shipping container holiday home built into a hillside in Australia

A unique holiday home in Australia has combined a stunning location with a quirky design after being constructed out of shipping containers.

The trio of shipping containers have been fashioned into a house sitting atop stilts on a steep slope near Wye River on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. The sleek interior of plywood forms the basis of the walls and cupboards while large windows and a balcony offer views of the surrounding forest and ocean.

House 28, as it is known, is the work of Melbourne-based Studio Edwards, who wanted to minimise the impact of the sustainably minded getaway. “Designed as a weekend retreat, this house is made from three 20-foot shipping containers,” said a spokesperson. “Two connect to form the living space with toilet, laundry and entry with the third a sleeping wing with two bedrooms, toilet and shower.”

The containers are connected by an external deck built on steel stilts, which sit on concrete pile foundations that keep the home anchored to the hillside. The northern-facing side of the home is designed so that native plants will grow over the building. The southern-facing side features doors and window that open out to look over the trees and towards the ocean. There’s also a green roof planted with native dichondra, which is designed to add additional thermal insulation and rainwater filtration.
