You’ll have a whimsical time glamping in an original fairground wagon in Cornwall

If you want to go glamping with a difference in England, an original fairground wagon that has been lovingly refurbished may appeal to you. Sanger’s Showman’s Wagon in set in a tree-lined meadow near the harbour town of Looe, Cornwall, and it was bought by its current owners from a retired fairground showman, who, like his mother, was born in the wagon.

Fairground living-wagons like this one were known as ‘palaces on wheels’ because they were so ornately decorated and beautifully made. There’s a pretty double bedroom in Sanger’s, and it has a spacious living/dining area with a real fireplace. The original Edwardian mahogany features with carved details and painted ceiling panels are still intact, complemented by opaque glass light fittings, flouncy curtains and a cute wood-burner for a warming welcome.

You’ll have a whimsical time glamping in the wagon, which of course has modern conveniences such as a proper flushing WC and hot water. An adorable painted-timber cabin comes as part of the package, and it has a kitchen/dining area and a separate shower-room with a double shower, WC, wash-basin and heated towel rail.

Outside there’s a seating area and a chiminea BBQ, in case you feel like dining al fresco. You can also say hello to Halcyon and Hobson, the very friendly Exmoor ponies who’ll be your neighbours in the meadow.

The tiny village of Lanreath is very close by, and a ten-minute drive will take you to the harbour town of Looe, which boasts a sandy beach, bustling streets and a choice of diving and fishing trips. The unspoilt Polperro, with spectacular views and an array of shops, galleries and places to eat and drink, is also a ten-minute drive away.
