If being pummelled and pampered is how you like to spend your holiday, Estonia has launched a “spa trail” map that might be of interest. The map aims to invite visitors to discover some of the best wellness, sauna and spa offerings available across the country, to coincide with its 100th anniversary celebrations. The trail includes Estonian traditions like juniper body peels and home-brewed beer treatments, as well as more luxurious offerings and countryside saunas.
The map highlights the key areas that provide a range of wellness experiences across five key categories: city spas, wellness spas, eco spas, saunas and sauna centres, and enables visitors to choose their own trail across the country. The city spas are the perfect place to visit during a weekend getaway or a long city-break, and Estonian capital Tallinn features a wide range of urban spas, where a variety of body treatments and fitness experiences are available.
Estonians have been using local ingredients found in nature in health and wellness therapies for centuries, and today’s modern eco spas still follow the same principles. They offer treatments that include mixing ecologically-grown herbs with clay, peat and natural plant oils to create organic treatments. There is also a craft beer bath, in which the natural extracts used to brew beer stimulate metabolism, help remove toxins and ease fatigue and stress.
Saunas in Estonia are considered to be so special, the smoke sauna traditions of Old Võromaa have been added to Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. There are many also wellness spas in Estonia, which are perfect for longer stays.
