Knossos Minoan Palace
If there’s one must-see in Crete, it’s the Palace of Knossos. Near of Heraklion, it’s the island’s most popular attraction, and for a good reason: it’s absolutely fascinating. Dating back to 1900BC, it was the hub of Crete’s Minoan civilization and where the fearsome Minotaur was said to have lurked in a labyrinth. Your guide will explain the myths surrounding the palace and its kings as you explore its treasures, including the throne room, the royal apartments and frescoes. Then you will go to Heraklion, Crete’s capital, for a mini-guided tour. See the city walls and the old harbour, which was dominated by a 16th century Venetian fortress. You will have two hours on your own to explore the city at your own leisure, perhaps shopping at the market, walking next to the harbour walls or relax in a waterside cafe. A great day of discovery for history and culture buffs.
