Royal caribbean, Carnival you name it all the same. The wages geared to third world employees. If you are from australasia, us or uk forget it. I did 6month contracts 7 days a week no breaks. Was paid less than half min wage of my home country. As for not getting contract until onboard, rubbish !! You get the contract and sign it prior to leaving your home country. No plane tickets until you have signed it and sent it back to the hiring company.. They said that they flying the flag of malta, that has nothing to do with wages. What it does mean is that the ship couldnt get a safety certificate from anywhere else, malta basically gives them away, so if you have structural, or crew emergency training issues, go to malta, get one easily at half the price…any other reputable country would refuse the ship a cert and therefore she couldnt sail until the repairs or problems were resolved.…shouldnt be allowed.

after cruising new Zealand I was shocked to find out it is $50 a month and 14 hour shifts...... It makes me sick this could happen in my country (Australia) I only went cruising once and swear never again. The amount of money the P.N.O cruise ship cost to travel on and over all money spent on board... what a joke.... give them a real weekly pay....

How they tell the passengers, they have wife and kids back home to feed... Then spend all the Money in the Casino or drugs, however if you don´t say you have kids back home to feed, you get substancial less Money.

I believe that this is highly sensationalized, I've had several friends growing up in the USA who went to work on a cruise ship as an adventure after high school, they planned to do a 1 year contract, they liked it so much that they stayed almost 3 years, saw the world, and two of them actually went on to work for the corporate offices of the cruise line. Not saying that this cannot happen, but it's definitely the exception as opposed to the normal. Yes, the job may suck for most, and to some the pay may be considered low, but not all jobs are for everybody either.

I would bet if they upped the cost by just a little, hardly if noticed by vacationers and used those extra funds to improve workers salaries and hours they would be better off in the end because people would feel better about cruising. I know we tipped our cabin attendant and a few of our regular servers a little extra because we know about some of the unfair practices.

i am an ex crew member for 2 different cruiselines and this is bullshit, it is true that some jobs are tougher than others but like in every country, before you get on a ship you receive a contract and tells you the ship you are going to, and also the salary. With this contract it is so easy to get your visa, yes you pay for your visa and medical exams, but these ones can be refunded by the cruise line, at least they did with me for 5 years. There is so many stateroom attendants that tell u how shitty the life on board is so you tip them better, i dont judge them that is how they make most of their money. So wot u saw that is a clear example, everyone has time off, yes we work long hours sometimes but the crew life is pretty awsome, you can get off the ship, not always but yes everyone has time off ashore, only about 30% of crew members stay on board whilst a port day, the rest is your time off, besides there is crew tours in which either they are free or you pay peanuts for them..... So the truth below deck is that you need to stay more than 5 weeks on board to know about this.....

Hi everyone. I Recruit for Steiner/The Onboard Spa. As of 20 August 2013 a new Maritime Law was passed world wide called the MLC law. This law protects all seafarers working on any form of ocean vessel from cruise ships to fish trawlers to oil rigs. Before this law was passed crew members were definitely exposed to these conditions seen above. But this is not the case any longer. I will not recruit for a company that does this to their staff members. I also worked onboard cruise ships for three years in the spa. I earned a large amount of money and enjoyed it very much. Some departments were not that lucky. But this has all changed now. Everyone can go back and enjoy themselves. Our company do not supply staff to Celebrity Cruises but to over 25 other cruise line companies.

Maritime lawyer again, one last point: 100 percent American tourists, 1 percent jobs. That's the real truth on cruise ships. Ever wonder why a ship goes to a foreign port right after leaving the U.S.? Or as in the Alaska trade, leaves from a foreign port. U.S. to U.S. means a U.S. flag ship and U.S. maritime labor unions, U.S. to foreign means: foreign flag is fine. All Carnival Cruise ships are foreign flag, all other big companies too. Labor is the only reason they survive - its cheap and that's because there are too many poor people and they are easy to get not like 100 years ago. Only the "officers": maybe white. Sorry, race plays a huge part of poverty.
