The government of Hong Kong is seeking to reduce the number of visitors allowed permits from mainland China. Currently travellers from 49 mainland cities qualify for the Individual Visit Scheme, which allows residents multi-entry travel permits to Hong Kong. The government has indicated the scheme will not be expanded but instead it hopes to lower the number of travellers who qualify, citing ‘pressure on local people’s livelihoods’ as the reason.
