Abandoned New York beach house gets a makeover from Berlin artist

Fort Tilden is something of a hidden gem in New York City, a nice, sandy beach that you don’t have to travel too far to get to from Manhattan. A former US Army installation, it’s now looked after by the National Parks service. However it’s not just sea and sand there – a new art installation is drawing tourists from far and wide.

“Rockaway!” featuring a site-specific installation by artist Katharina Grosse on the beach in Fort Tilden opens with a celebration TODAY from 4-6pm! Join us on the beach this afternoon, or follow #RockawayColors for more images of this stunning work.

MoMA PS1 is the sister institution of the Museum Of Modern Art in Manhattan, and its director Klaus Biesenbach and Berlin artist Katharina Grosse have devised a nice way to say goodbye to one of the beach’s most well-known buildings, a former aquatic centre. It’s been condemned since damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, but now Katharina has transformed it in to a piece of art using red spray paint.

Entitled Rockaway!, the art project covers the building on the pensinsula of the same name, and sadly, the building will soon be demolished. But for now, tourists and day trippers can enjoy the beautiful sight.

Katharina is known for adding colour to a tough situation to draw the eye and people’s attention – she also used orange spray paint to cover an abandoned property in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
