Rare Lincoln artifact goes on display in Indiana

A newly discovered artifact from Abraham Lincoln’s early life will be on display for the first time this Friday at the Indiana State Museum, as part of the state’s bicentennial celebrations.

A wooden mallet, used by Lincoln to split logs into fence posts, has been handed down for generations by one Indiana family. Lincoln gave the mallet to his neighbour, Barnabas Carter, as he was preparing to move from Indiana to Illinois at the age of 21. The family has treasured the mallet and safeguarded it for almost 200 years. This is the first time the item has ever been displayed publicly.
