See clouds rolling over New Zealand’s mountain ranges in new time-lapse video

New Zealand is famous for its rolling landscapes, rocky peaks and rugged, unspoiled beauty. But if the country’s already stellar reputation as a stunning destination wasn’t enough to convince you to go, a new time-lapse video captured over the course of a year highlighting the boundless beauty on offer will definitely do the trick.

Called Aotearoa, the 4k video was shot and edited by photographer Corey Marshall, who visited locations such as Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, Mount Aspiring National Park, Queenstown, Taranaki National Park, Catlins Forest Park, Wanaka and Tongariro National Park, spending hours journeying to remote locations to get the footage.

“I have been fortunate to spend the last year living in New Zealand and have had the pleasure of experiencing some of the amazing landscapes that this country has to offer. This is my first attempt at a time-lapse video, and I spent countless hours hiking around lugging a heavy pack through the mountains to get to some of these awesome vistas. I feel lucky to have been able to explore this amazing country and share its beauty,” Corey said.

Aotearoa is the Maori Name for New Zealand, and translates to “the land of the long white cloud”, and the video shows feathery formations passing over mountain ranges, warm sunsets on beaches and lakes and blooming flowers dancing in meadows. It took Corey over one year to capture all of the footage, and the video includes 30 different sequences, each containing approximately 300 different photographs.

“My most memorable experience was climbing up Roy’s Peak in Wanaka for a sunrise, and spending the first hour and a half of the hike wondering if I was going to get above the thick layer of clouds. About 45 minutes from the top, I came out above the low clouds and was able to witness the ocean of fog flowing around the mountains,” Corey said.
