A video shows the moment a US submarine broke through a thick sheet of ice and entered the Arctic Circle around Alaska.

Two submarines have arrived at Navy Ice Camp Sargo, the US’s temporary station on top of a floating ice sheet in the Arctic to carry out training. The submarine featured in the footage is the USS Hartford from San Diego, which is conducting Arctic transits, North Pole surfacings (popping up through the ice), and the collection of scientific data. The drill is part of a five-week exercise to test operational readiness of the US submarine force.

The footage taken by a camera located on the temporary army base, shows the dramatic moment the sheet of seemingly still and impenetrable ice suddenly cracks and the ‘conning tower’ emerges dramatically.

It then shows the rest of the submarine suddenly emerge through the ice in one dramatic push. That’s followed by the still more surprising exit of some of the USS Hartford’s crew, who proceed to then excitedly explore the surrounding endless ice float.
